by admin on Jul.03, 2009, under Accessories

Generally, many jewelry fans popularly know of the Tahitian pearls and South Sea pearls, as being the most valuable jewels in the world and that is true. Nevertheless, seconding these is the Akoya pearls whose basic source is Japan that were also among the first to be nurtured inside an oyster.

By the way, the pearls are found in a very important saltwater Akoya oyster and just like the black-lipped oyster (source of black pearls), these pearls are clear and lovely. The same nucleation process involving slotting in a bead inside the oyster that then reacts by producing nacre substance that oysters use to coat their shells is used for Akoya cultured bead. This time, the secretion coats the bead and it is then harvested after a few years.

Now almost all the Akoya pearls found in the markets are formed through this process that is normally performed if the oyster species responsible are rare. They look spectacular if used to design earring studs or necklaces just like the black pearls. Basically, the Akoya colors are either cream or white although they may also have coats of other colors such as emerald, sapphire, yellow or rose. If some one were interested in buying Akoya pearls, it would be imperative to consider that just like diamonds; their quality is determined by scaling based on characteristics such as sheen, rounded shape, surface defects and nacre thickness.

A very high quality Akoya pearls must have thickness depicted by the nacre (secretion of the oyster) amounts when the bead is off its body. It should also shine a lot on its surface whilst the rounder it appears the better sign it is to verify its authenticity. And who would want bumps and bruises in a world-class charm like Akoya pearls? The AAA scale for the pearls symbolize the best of all the above features whereas AA is the following grade with about ninety five percent goodness maximum starting from a low of seventy-five. Of course grade A Akoya pearl are the worst quality but it is not a wonder to find surprising inconsistent rating among distinct jewel dealers for these.
